Introduction - Understanding the Marketplace

The marketplace refers to the economic environment in which goods and services are bought and sold.  It is where buyers and sellers come together to exchange their goods and services.

As we discuss our next topic of study we will be looking into understanding the marketplace. The aim of this study is to help union members understand the financial difficulties and obstacles that union contractors face every day. These contractors not only manage the work, but they face many other daily pressures that include hunting for new business, bidding, assuming business debt, paying office bills, and meeting payroll as they work to create jobs for union workers. The success of union contractors provides future work opportunities for the union members.

After discussing this topic, you should be able to:

1. Explain some of the key business tasks that an union contractor must handle.

2. Understand how the success of a union contractor impacts the future of the union.

3. Identify the challenges and risks that a union contractor deals with every day.
