PRO TIP

SUCCESS IN THE WORKPLACE:
Time Theft, Productivity, and the Union’s Success

Time theft occurs when someone is paid for work they did not do. This can hurt productivity and make it harder for the union to compete. For example, if a worker is paid for 8 hours but actually only works for 6 hours, they are taking 2 hours of pay for no work. This not only affects the worker but also the team and the project. When more time is wasted, the company loses more money and it becomes harder for the union to compete in the marketplace. It's important for workers to track their work hours accurately and put in the effort required for each job to maintain their integrity and professionalism.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

The Scenario:

As a pipefitter on a construction project, you notice a fellow pipefitter taking longer breaks and leaving work early, which is known as time theft. You know that this time theft can harm the project's success.  And, the worker has been warned before.

What would you do in this situation?
Select an answer below to learn more.

The correct choice is A). Report the behavior to a supervisor or union representative, follow the proper channels. This will ensure that the situation is addressed and the project stays on track.

If you choose B)  Warning your fellow pipefitter again, he is not understanding the seriousness of his behavior which is affecting the project and the union. This is a serious violation of trust.

If you choose C) Ignoring the behavior, it could be seen as condoning or approving of the time theft and may harm the project and the union in the long run. This is a serious violation of trust.
